Wings of Rescue Israel facilitates the rescue of Canaan Dogs mixes from overcrowded Israeli shelters by working with partner organizations on the West Coast of the United States. Our dogs are placed in Israeli foster homes to prepare them for their new lives and provide basic training. Once stateside, the Canaan Dog mixes are made available for adoption through our partner shelters in the Pacific Northwest. Many of the dogs find homes within days of their arrival.

Giving Homeless Canaan Dogs from Israel a Second Chance
The Israeli Canaan Dog
Canaan Dogs are an ancient Middle Eastern breed used for thousands of years as guard and herding dogs. Their appearance has remained virtually unchanged over the millenia. Today, they continue to be bred in the deserts in Israel, and are used by the Bedouins to guard their herds.
Unfortunately, as a result of uncontrolled breeding and a declining need for these working dogs, Canaan Dogs and Canaan Dog mixes end up in disproportionate numbers at Israeli shelters or rescue organizations. Often left to fend for themselves, they wander into the desert towns scavenging for food. Mothers and their litters are routinely dumped near army bases or by the roadside.
Given the size and exercise needs of this highly intelligent working breed, it is simply impossible to find enough adopters in Israel. While Canaans can adjust to apartment living if properly exercised, they generally do better with access to a big yard or property where they can burn off their energy. In a country as tiny as Israel where many people live in apartment buildings, the Canaan Dog’s breed-specific needs make it a challenge to place them.
